My internship as a software engineer at Casey's in Ankeny, Iowa, was an amazing experience that went beyond just building my technical skills. I had the chance to work with some incredibly talented and supportive people who helped me grow both professionally and personally. The collaborative environment made it easy to form meaningful connections, which I’ll always value. Living in the Midwest, especially in such a beautiful state, gave me a whole new perspective on life here—it’s something I’ll carry with me forever.

Additionally, I had the unique opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., where I met key people on Capitol Hill and at the Pentagon. Engaging with such influential figures was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that broadened my understanding of government and defense. These meetings gave me a rare glimpse into the inner workings of U.S. leadership, something that has deeply impacted my outlook. This internship, along with the D.C. experience, has been a key moment in my career journey, and I’m excited about what comes next.

One of the best bits of advice I’ve ever received in life is that growth is never convenient, it’s scary and uncomfortable. And when my first day of the internship came, it was exactly what I felt. But let me tell you it was the best day of my life so far, even if I didn’t know it or realize it at that time. The knowledge, the experience, and especially the people that I met here are immeasurable in value. Every experience, and emotion that I have been through here is priceless and really special to me. Therefore, it is imprinted in my heart and will be cherished forever. 

And that’s the reason why I am beyond grateful to Dan, to the AUK team for making this happen, and to Doka, and my supervisor Marcelo for everything they did for me and taught me as there are no words that would describe this feeling.

AUK Global Internship program is an invaluable chance for me to understand how organizations of such scale work. The most important thing was that we were not doing just some useless work, but we were given many real-life projects that were getting implemented in the process. 

Despite working and learning we not only explored American culture in all the possible ways but also tried to tell our story too. For example, we organized an art exhibition at our company with Ukrainian food and art that shows who we are as a nation and what we are going through now, in times of war in our country.
