This course is designed for those who plan to apply to a Master's program at American University Kyiv (AUK) and aim to confidently master English language for their career and studies. You will attend regular live online sessions with native English speakers to significantly improve your writing, listening, reading, and speaking skills in English up to B2 level. About the course

American University Kyiv (AUK) requires a high level of English proficiency since all courses are taught in English. The English for Professionals course will prepare you for success to learn completely in English!

However, English for Professionals is more than just an English language course. You will gain confidence in communication in social, academic and job settings, participate in group projects, develop reports, work on academic papers, and give presentations. During the course, you will also have the opportunity to attend open lectures from leading AUK professors and presentations of Master's programs. This course will further help you to develop the confidence that will drive your education and future career prospects in a global direction.

Course structure

AUK English for Professionals is designed for students with current English level of В1 and consists out of 3 modules.

Module 1: Intermediate Foundations (B1+)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

use appropriate present tenses to describe habits, routines, and preferences
share past experiences
describe and express opinions
develop appropriate language for medical situations
describe physical symptoms and issues
describe real and hypothetical plans for the future
acquire appropriate lexical structures to discuss activities
develop appropriate sentence structures to describe accomplishments and successes

Module 2: Intermediate Communication (B2-)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

read articles about science, social science, art, and history
describe benefits and challenges
make suggestions and recommendations
share opinions and describe feelings and emotions
discuss hopes and dreams
report on facts and research
explain causes and effects
make educated guesses and predictions about the future

Module 3: Intermediate
Language Skills (B2)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

identify and outline main ideas and supporting details while reading a book or listening to video or podcast
figure out the meaning of unknown words
paraphrase what you have read or heard
write well-developed texts and process opinions
use varied sentence structure
use broad vocabulary

To qualify for this course, we ask you to pass the Duolingo English Practice Test to check your approximate level.

To complete your enrollment to this program, you will need to submit the application form with payment to reserve your place. Our enrollment advisor will help you at this stage. After that, you will receive an admission confirmation.

What qualifications in English will I have at the end of this course?

Upon successfully completing AUK English for Professionals, you will improve your English to a B2 level and will be prepared to study at AUK.

How will I be taught?

Our course uses curriculum and online materials provided by Arizona State University, one of the largest public universities in the United States. The course will be taught through practical individual exercises and group projects. All course materials, schedules, and links to online meetings with instructors are available 24/7 on our Canvas learning management system platform. In addition to instructor-led classes, students will have access to numerous materials for self-study.

Does this course provide a certificate?

Students will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion of the Course if the student scores 70 percent or higher on the final assessment. If the student scores below 70 percent, AUK provides a Certificate of Participation.

Does this course offer any additional bonuses?

Successful completion of this course will count towards the English language requirements for admission to AUK. Additionally, students of AUK English for Professionals become part of the vibrant AUK community and gain access to AUK's digital library and open lectures from leading AUK professors.

Why do I need to take an English proficiency test?

To qualify for the AUK English for Professionals course, it is important for us to understand your current level of English to place you in the appropriate group.

What is the course schedule?

Online classes with the instructor will take place from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on weekdays two times per week for the Standart group.

Can I pay in cash?

American University Kyiv does not accept cash payments. Payments can be made online through our website, or you can request an invoice from our accounting department. Please email our Enrollment Advisor if you need any invoice: study@auk.edu.ua.

What if I fail?

If you do not meet the course requirements, you will not be eligible for the Certificate of Successful Completion. You will only receive a Certificate of Participation in the course and you will still need to provide proof of a B2 level of English to be accepted into one of our Master’s programs.
