Last week the students from AUK’s Global Management program participated in a keynote discussion with Dr. Janusz Bugajski, Senior Fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, organized as part of the Master’s course on “The Global Security System: Challenges and Actors”. Dr. Bugajski has been a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense, USAID and a course chair for South Central Europe Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State. Dr. Bugajski has authored 20 books on Europe, Russia, and trans-Atlantic relations and is a columnist for several media outlets. His latest book is entitled Failed State: Planning for Russia’s Rupture.

While addressing the students Dr. Bugajski outlined: “I do believe that the war of russia against Ukraine reinforces my thesis. My book on russia’s rupture was completed in January a few weeks before the war. But I wouldn’t change a single word. The reason I am talking about this is as follow: during the last 30 years russia has not been able to transform itself either to a nation state or a civic state or democratic pluralistic state or even a stable empire”.

The meeting with AUK students focused on russia as a failed state, and its imminent collapse (“de-imperialization”) along ethnic lines, accelerated by the failure of Putin’s aggressive war against Ukraine.

We are highly thankful to Dr. Bugajski for his fruitful discussion with AUK students, as well as to Mark Voyger, Program Director for the MSc in Global Management at AUK for organizing this meeting.
