This week we had the first Fall AUK Talks: Character-Driven Leadership with very inspiring faculty from Arizona State University - Ambassador Michael C. Polt, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia (2004-06) and Estonia (2009-12), co-founder of ASU Leadership, Diplomacy and National Security Lab, and Lieutenant General Benjamin Freakley, Special Advisor to ASU President Michael Crow, co-founder of ASU Leadership, Diplomacy and National Security Lab.
The master class was built around character-driven leadership, diplomacy and national security education with an overview of the key concepts that create a trusted leader in any environment.
While explaining how trust is created and sustained and what is a must for leaders, Lieutenant General Benjamin Freakley outlined:
“Ethical organization is a key for leaders. Being authentic and setting clear boundaries then people understand who you are and what you stand for. They want to be a part of your organization, and your organization moves forward and is profitable.
And you know, we see an unethical organization called the russian army that is killing people, destroying property, and raping women, horrible ethical behavior. And on the other hand, we see positive behavior in Ukrainian Armed Forces.
When we talk about self-discipline, I think of your soldiers often. They have to get up and do the same things to make sure they're ready to fight and defeat the russians while they protect the people of Ukraine. Ethically we want to make sure we maintain our character, our reputation, and our integrity so we can act ethically, and self-discipline does this for us and your soldiers. That's what is a key to leadership is creating ethical behavior”.
