At the last AUK Talks with AUK rector Roman Sheremeta on Ukraine’s economy before, during and after the war, Dr. Sheremeta addressed the students with the economic overview. It showed the terrible devastation to the economy with the 40% GDP decline. At the same time, it outlined the strong resilience: in February, 2022 the number of enterprises which fully stopped their operations reached 75% while in November, 2022 this figure was already only 10%.

Roman Sheremeta outlined: “Ukraine will win and will return out of this terrible war stronger and more resilient. The researchers of the countries which went through terrible war devastations showed that they could build better and more modern economy. It took around 10 years. We must be realistic. It takes time”.

While replying on the students’ questions on the current demographic situation in Ukraine, Dr. Sheremeta mentioned: “What Ukrainians are doing right now will be written in the books of history. Everyone wants to be a part of something great, this is the time. I believe that a lot of Ukrainians who were not even planning to come back, who left Ukraine 20 years ago, they will come back to rebuild the country”.

We are highly thankful to Dr. Sheremeta for his profound discussion on the economic future of Ukraine and students for their questions.
