At our last AUK Talks we had the honor of welcoming an outstanding diplomat, Michael Carpenter, the United States Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the Biden administration.
Mr. Carpenter has strong diplomatic expertise in the post-Soviet region and was personally involved in measures that were directed at avoiding unprecedented russia’s aggression against Ukraine. He is seeing the roots of the war much deeper than in 2022 or 2014 and states the extraordinary importance of Ukraine’s victory not only for the country but for the whole world.
Mr. Carpenter outlined that it is the most global war today and the largest land war since WWII but this is part and parcel of russia’s war against the West. In his opinion, at least a decade before launching this war russia was waging war against the West via trying to undermine liberal democracies, using the methods the democracies use to communicate with their systems.
He also stressed that the world should stop this neo-imperialistic colonial war against Ukraine and deliver the strategic defeat to russia and the strategic victory to Ukraine. Also, the world should establish a system in which it is impossible for neo-imperialist power to pass international borders. Otherwise, the world enters that kind of world, then none is safe.
We are grateful Michael Carpenter for sharing insights and for his strong faith in Ukraine’s future as an essential part of the democratic world. Also we thank Mark Voyger, the Director of the MSc in Global Management program, for inviting the speaker and moderating the Talk.
