On September 23, 2025, Prof. Dr. Hanna Shvindina, Associate Professor at American University Kyiv (AUK) and UNET Fellow at the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS, Berlin), took part in an international panel discussion on “Care, leadership and (gendered) resilience of war-affected Ukrainian society.”

The event brought together leading Ukrainian and international researchers:

  • Nataliia Lomonosova, on municipal social workers and everyday coping strategies
  • Dr. Olena Strelnyk, on the invisible labour of elderly care within families
  • Prof. Dr. Hanna Shvindina, on women’s leadership during wartime

Moderation was performed by Prof. Gwendolyn Sasse.

In her presentation, Prof. Shvindina highlighted the underestimated value of female leadership in many aspects across the sectors of Ukrainian economy.

This panel formed part of the UNETFellowship programme at ZOiS, which supports Ukrainian scholars in advancing their research in the social sciences. The fellowship has attracted around 130 applications over its four years, demonstrating both the demand for and the vitality of Ukrainian scholarship. This year’s cohort includes scholars such as Oleksandra Kokhan, Oleksandra Koidel, Tetiana Lukeria, Yuliia Abibok, Volodymyr Vakhitov, and Olena Bohdan. In September, fellows including Olena Strelnyk, Nataliia Otryshchenko, Nataliia Tsybuliak, Maryna Rabinovych, Tasha Lomonosova, Hanna Shvindina, and Dariia Yashkina will complete their projects.
